Feeling anxious about attending the upcoming Public Safety and Health Virtual Career Fair (VCF) because you are unsure where you fit within the industry? Alleviate your uneasiness by understanding your career role and the portability it offers.
There are employment opportunities that cross what would be considered industry boundaries; many people who work in the public safety and health fields hold degrees in other disciplines such as IT, business and English. If you are a student or graduate who would like to attend the upcoming Public Safety and Health VCF, take an assessment of your current job role and identify where similar roles exist within that sector.
As an example, all industries utilize technology and employ people who bring specialized experience in information technology. In today’s marketplace, all businesses, including correctional systems, hospitals, and emergency and disaster management organizations, rely on technology to operate. By expanding your portable career options, many students and alumni will find opportunities in technology that are outside of the industry that many tend to overlook.
Another group with portable career roles who are pigeonholed into thinking there are limited job opportunities are people in the business sector. The truth is that all trades operate as a business and job seekers with a business background can focus beyond employment with banks, investment companies and consulting firms. Think of your role as portable: To which industry would you like to move into?
Opportunities for even the most specialized roles can be found in a variety of fields. Are you a statistics person? All businesses analyze data to help them make sound decisions. Data analytics is an area of business that attracts mathematicians to perform specific functions as part of routine business operations.
Are you an Arts & Humanities major? Depending on the actual organization, you may be able to find a job in which you can apply your writing skills to draft reports, articles on industry trends, research findings and press releases to highlight newsmakers.
Feeling empowered? Leverage your confidence by attending the upcoming AMU and APU Virtual Career Fair Prep Clinics targeted for the Public Safety and Health industry. Attending one of the prep clinics will help you discover more about the employers attending the upcoming AMU and APU Virtual Career Fair and determine if there is an employer seeking someone with your unique set of skills that you may not have considered previously.
Be sure to reach out to the Department of Career Services to have a coach review your resume ahead of the VCF, research the companies that will be attending and have an open mind about the role you can bring to an organization.
