Having good customer service is a must for many businesses. So, here’s a thought, could good customer service techniques be used employees to achieve career success?

According to smallbiztrends.com, customer service does matter. The same concept can be applied to the employee. If the employee uses good customer services rules in the workplace, the results can lead to promotions and leadership opportunities.

If you want to become a better employee, then here are five customer service rules to consider:

Answer your phone. Forget about using Caller ID. In the workplace you should answer the phone. If someone is calling, it’s either a quick question you could answer in five seconds or it’s an opportunity for you to tell them you can follow-up with information. Bottom line is, don’t be rude. The person across the hall knows you’re at your desk.

Don’t make promises unless you will keep them. Reliability is essential to making a customer happy. The same rule applies to being an employee. Stay committed to deadlines and meetings. Give realistic goals for completing a project, because nothing annoys your boss more than waiting on something you promised.

Take the extra step. During the holidays, businesses tend to hire additional staff to help with the volume of customers. Holiday greeters provide extra services like giving out in-store coupons and helping customers find sale items. Imagine if you went above and beyond the required tasks at work. People will notice and will tell others.

Be helpful – even if there’s no immediate profit in it.  Next time you’re in the store, notice that the customer service station is towards the front of the store. Why is that? Businesses want to make it easy for customers to get help. Think about your desk at work as being that same as the customer service station in the store. Your job is to be inviting and provide help and information.

Deal with complaints. No one likes hearing complaints, but if you give the complaint your attention, you may be able to fix the problem for the customer. Properly deal with complaints in the workplace so that everyone has a comfortable work environment.
