Online Job Searching: Get the Biggest Bang for Your Buck

management-movesSeasoned career searchers will tell you that the most successful job searches will have a plan, involve being organized, and knowing your material. However, that is often easier said than done, particularly with the overwhelming number of open positions available. While there are a plethora of sites, blogs and job boards to choose from, often the most effective ones are provided and administered by a university’s Career Services office.

February 2015 is Career Month, and there are a variety of events designed to assist job seekers. Twice a week the Career Services team will be posting blogs directly related to professional development and job searching in a digital world. In addition, daily tips will be posted to the Career Services social media sites on topics relating to job searching and the blogs being posted. Have an upcoming interview, or would simply like feedback on your interview attire? Post a picture of your wardrobe using #CareerChat to allow our team to congratulate you, offer interview assistance, and feedback on your choice of clothing!

In addition, there are several other personalized events giving participants the personal attention and guidance their job search deserves. Visit www.apus.edu/careerlink to read the full descriptions of each event and to register (some have limited spots available), or email careerservices@apus.edu for more information. Either way, make attending a priority if you are serious about your job search.

February 3-5: One2One Resume Prep Clinic is a one hour, live session with a highly trained career coach. During this session, the career coach will review the attendees resume using a secure screen share program.

February 10-12: VCF Prep Workshops will be held live, where attendees will pick-up specific tips for how to maximize our upcoming virtual career fair and the art of follow-up. Register through CareerLink for additional information regarding the dates, times, and virtual location of these workshops.

February 17: Career Coaches will be online within the Virtual Career Fair to chat with students and alumni preparing for the VCF. Be sure to ask how to make an impactful first impression in a chat session and how to verbalize your skills. Those who work with our team have a higher success rate being asked to apply for positions than those who don’t so this opportunity is a must!

February 18-19: Virtual Career Fair. Employers will be online from 9:00am – 7:00pm EST, and coaching staff will be online from 9:00am – 4:00pm with general support available until 7:00pm. Over 30 employers have already registered, such as Disney, ClearedJobs.Net, Engility, PRISM, and Gavin de Becker and Associates. The full list is available from within CareerLink. www.apus.edu/careerlink

February 24: LIVE LinkedIn Chat with Career Services! Post questions inside the CS LinkedIn Group and receive immediate responses from the Career Services staff from 8:00am – 4:00pm EST. Questions can range from getting a security clearance to jobs based on degree selection. Join us!
