The Open Access Movement: Challenges and Opportunities

Interview with Dr. Patricia Campbell and Dr. Elena Mastors
Dr. Campbell is the Dean of Graduate Studies at American Public University.
Dr. Mastors is the Vice President, Dean of Applied Research at American Public University.

How does the current system of publishing academic articles work, and what are the challenges of this? There is still a lot to be learned about the risks of moving forward with open access, but there seems to be a lot of opportunity as well. Is there a risk of losing the peer review process? Where does self-publishing fit into this movement? All these questions will be addressed within this podcast. Dr. Campbell and Dr. Mastors explain what this movement means to the online university, American Public University, and they explore the gains and losses of heading in this direction for future publications.

About the Speakers

Dr. Patricia Campbell has numerous publications in academic journals including Journal of Political Science Education, International Feminist Journal of Politics, African Studies Quarterly, Politics and Policy; and Africa Today. Her co-authored textbook on Global Studies was published in 2010 (Wiley-Blackwell). She has been active serving on various committees of the American Political Science Association (APSA), most recently she was elected to the APSA’s Committee on Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Elena Mastors is an expert on political psychology as it pertains to conflict, terrorism and political leadership. She writes frequently on understanding leaders and group dynamics from a political-psychological perspective. She is also a frequent lecturer on the important role of individuals and group dynamics in armed groups. Most recently, she conducted field work in Northern Ireland.
