Enhance Your Presence Around the Office

Milling about the office day-to-day with your peripherals covered is very limiting. Even just opening up by saying “hi” or asking someone about their day can bring about new opportunities. To get noticed around the office it’s important to be a little outspoken, be cordial to anyone you pass by in the hall, and to try to adopt some level of understanding for your peers. By doing this it can open up a window for new projects, greater visibility to upper management, and a boost in your self esteem.

One easy way to come out of your shell a bit more is by adding some positive feedback in staff meetings. When the group leader is doing the round robin stick your hand up and offer some insight into a project you’re working on, or give some kudos to a fellow co-worker. Just having the courage to talk in front of a room full of strangers can have an immediate impact on your self confidence.

If you’re naturally introverted this could be one of the main reasons you’re grasping for opportunities to get noticed. Not having the skills of a social butterfly doesn’t mean you can’t win over a room, it just means you’ll need to be more crafty and smart about it. The point here is to be vocal when it’s called for, and to not be afraid to stick your neck out for a golden chance at something positive for your career.

On the off chance that your boss is holding you back from being more visible this just means that you’ll need to push that much harder. Don’t go behind their back to share your thoughts or ideas, but make sure they’re well documented through emails. Again, make sure to speak up in staff meetings when leadership is present so they know about your interests. Some opportunities go to the extroverts first because they’re open about what they’re looking for. Mimic that behavior in ways that you feel comfortable in order to get the same advantages as them.
