Feeling Sick? Don’t Be a Martyr

Be productive at work, not a nuisance. If the sneezing and coughing doesn’t give you away, the rampant spread of your cold to your colleagues will certainly indicate that you may be the source of the illness. Take a sick day if you’re not feeling well enough to move, let alone think.

There are some employees who model perfection having never taken a sick day. Take for example Deborah Ford, after 44 years as a postal worker she is retiring with all of her awarded sick days in tact. According to the article she owes this to her work ethic. Ford displays an ideal attitude when it comes to dealing with being sick. Her dedication to her job is the best way to approach your work everyday, and how to manage yourself when you have a cold.

It is honorable that you would rather come into work and suffer than stay at home and get your rest. The fact is that an office is akin to a school. Germs are spread around just as quickly as gossip is. If you come in you risk wiping out the entire office, which could stall production.

If you really feel like you still need to contribute even when you’re knee deep in tissues then find out if you have remote working capability. When you go this route just remember to wipe down the office equipment before your return! We are still in the middle of flu season and with the spread of the scary Norovirus you’ll want to be sure you’re protecting yourself, and your cube mates.
