Work on Removing Your Career Fears in 2013

What is a career fear? It is something that keeps you up at night. A rational fear of the unknown within your office walls can cause restless nights, undue stress, and lowered job performance. Before you can begin to tear down the things that frighten you about work, you need to write down what they are.

To get you thinking, I’ve started a sample list below. These fears can be about inanimate objects, people you work with, or an action yet to take place.

  1. Being replaced by someone younger.
  2. My co-worker is out to get me; they want my job.
  3. If I call out sick, will my boss think less of me?
  4. I will never get to be a manager.
  5. I can’t learn fast enough, and I don’t know how to do my job.

Sometimes you’ll notice that your list can be remedied with some training. A feeling of incompetency can lead to thoughts of rejection, and inadequacy. If you are well equipped to perform your job then some of that fear may subside. As for other items pertaining to co-workers, work with them. If you think someone doesn’t like you and may be out to ruin you then have a talk with them. Your boss should have an open door policy as well. Holding things may not be the healthiest route to take things, so share your concerns when necessary to get a level head.

Whether your list has two items, or 20, make it a point to work on them through 2013. Setting a target date for each doesn’t make much sense, I suggest setting goals instead. If you’re shy about talking to the CEO, find opportunities to engage with them at company events where the pressure is off a little. The  more you power through your insecurities, the better you will feel in your position, and about yourself.
