How to Work Creativity Into Your Day

We all need some amount of creativity in our daily lives. For the non-creative worker it is not a requirement for getting the job done. Some job fields you may think aren’t creative like information technology, physics, public health, but in reality mostly all positions require some bit of ingenuity and creativity at times.

Take for example forensic accounting. The field of numbers is rigid, and getting “creative” can land you in jail. This role is the creative side of number crunching. You’re an investigator that uses numbers for clues, and sometimes you have to think outside the box to solve the mystery.

What about when your job doesn’t have an interesting slant?

When you’re not feeling inspired, the position may not either. In this case you’ll have to add your own mystery and creativity. Start with your everyday tasks. If you have to send out a certain amount of emails everyday, look to see if there is a way to consolidate, or plan a short meeting instead. Look at your calendar for monthly occurrences. How can you make next month’s report more dynamic than the last one? Check for newer software, or consider creating new placement opportunities for tracking items.

What about if you’re not particularly creative to begin with?

I’ve heard this before from IT professionals. If you’ve ever worked on a help desk, your life is solving problems. Creativity is partly about finding solutions. Even if you’re drafting a proposal for a new workflow process, or creating a guide for new hires, you are accessing a creative component of your brain.

Just like the words “I can’t” shouldn’t be part of your vocabulary, “I’m not creative” should be removed as well. There are always ways to pepper in innovation, even if it comes in the form of a new shared desk space, or a document loading system on a cloud.
