Pitch Your Project, Not Just Your Idea

Companies want innovators. What is the next big idea? In technology it could be nanotechnology, the next tablet, or holographic interfaces. For security it could be hands-free controls for securing networks, and better alarms and safeguards on cyberattacks and hacks. When we come up with ideas we’re quick to share the thought, sometimes without any research or findings to back it up. Instead of shooting from the hip, flesh out the project first, then present next.

Start out with the deliverables. What do you need to be produced? Dole out everything starting at research, funding (if necessary), project members and their roles, and a realistic time frame for everything to be completed. Before you meet with these people share a project outline, objective, potential use for the industry and your company, and possible issues with the product. Since it’s your idea, own it. Don’t leave it up to your colleagues to do the thinking for you. Brainstorming meetings are great when you come up against a roadblock,  but not a good solution for initial creation.

After you have buy-in from the group move forward with entering the tasks into a project management system. Assign tasks, and share responsibility for project management in the more narrowed areas of expertise. Be a great innovator by being a great project manager!
