Stimulate Productivity in the Office by Pretending You’re Remote

Even if you’re not a social  butterfly at work there’s plenty there to disrupt production. How do you get your motivation and focus back when you’re working between cubicle confines? Try pretending you’re remote, especially if you’re not able to telecommute on occasion, to get back to work.

Believe it or not most remote workers are more engaged than those sitting at a desk. At home you’re self-motivating. Since you’re not in the office you are putting more effort into contacting your co-workers through other means. For example, you may use chat more, or web conferencing. The alone time also gives you space to work with your thoughts without someone hovering nearby. And for those who sit around several colleagues, you don’t have to hear their conversations when you’re working.

You can play pretend by blocking out an hour or so in your calendar for this time. Put on your headphones to cancel out noise, and limit interactions to email, chat, or phone conversations. If it’s simply too loud in your area find a spare room or office to work in. Just make sure to capitalize on this time “alone”. Who knows, after a few practice runs it could be something you pitch to your boss as a trial basis.
