Know When to Send a Thank You Note

Sending a thank you through email is a nice way to show appreciation. If it’s a friend, an in-person thank you or a sticky with a note works too. But there are times when an email isn’t enough. When should you send a formal thank you, on a card or stationary?

There isn’t a formula, or exact science for picking who you send a thank you card too. While in the office here are some situations to heavily consider following up with a card.

  • Job interview
  • Working with a new colleague on a big project
  • Meeting or interviewing someone outside of your department
  • When you’re sent a gift over the holidays from a co-worker or client
  • If a co-worker covered for you; like they took over a project while you were out, stuck up for you, etc.

Go with your gut. If they went out of their way to help on something, that isn’t part of their project list, then it’s probably a good idea to follow-up with that thank you. If you haven’t worked with them before, but want to in the future (and they’re outside your company) a thank you is always a great idea. Just remember to be cordial, and give out what you want to get back!
