Burnout can come in many forms. It can be gradual, or sneak up on you after one tense  meeting. Stress comes with any occupation, so knowing when to identify burnout is very important.

Here are some triggers for a work burnout:

  • Lots or responsibility and work, but no down time or title to show for it.
  • Being a target for your great work to the point that you’re being overused for projects.
  • Being glued to technology. If your phone stays close to you as if it were an appendage.
  • Not being the favorite. Whether it’s in your head or a well-known fact, not being the bosses favorite can start to wear on you.
  • You’re work is brilliant, but not rewarded or acknowledged accordingly.

If any of these are hitting the nail on the head consistently for you, then you’re getting close to a mini meltdown. Before you hit your wall consider your options.

You can choose to walk away, and find a new job or career that’s better suited to your ideals and lifestyle. Or, you can stay and try to work it out. Try your direct manager first. Explain your role and where you’d like to see it in the next few months. A good  manager will do what they can to make you happy and keep you on board. You need to make them aware of your gripes (within reason). Remember to be direct and specific. Try to stray away from emotions, and keep it on topic of your work atmosphere and productivity.
