Don’t Anonymously Address the Hiring Manager

We all have names, so taking the extra care to look for the hiring manager’s name for your cover letter.

I caught a great article from Liz Ryan of Business Week this morning on dropping the “Dear Sir/Madam” altogether. It’s antiquated, and was more appropriate many years ago. Most job postings will list the POC for applying, and will ask that you email them directly with your application and resume. If you don’t see a name, do a little digging on the company’s website for a recruiter or HR personnel. While it may get initially reviewed by someone else, it will show that you took the time to do your research to personalize it. The lack of attention to detail and personalization could show that you’re sending the same generic cover letter to every company you apply to.

So, if you want to stand out from your peers drop the formal greeting and get a bit more personal.
