Salt, meat, and great employers: Thoughts on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For

Ask any job seeker—finding a job is only half the battle. What’s the other half? Finding a good job. Even if you aren’t particularly fond of your job, having an employer (or perhaps being surrounded by a group of people) that demonstrably cares can keep you from getting sour. A good employer, offering stellar employee-focused benefits, can be the salt used to preserve your interest and passion for your career field. What? Salt? Yes, salt. In the same way that salt was used a means of giving meat a longer shelf life before the invention of refrigeration, a good employer allows you to preserve whatever feelings of fondness you may have for a particular job for longer than you may otherwise, extending your shelf life in your field.

Recently, Fortune once again compiled its time-honored list of 100 Best Companies to Work For, 2011 edition. In addition to listing each employer, the list tells why each employer is on the list. What makes number one, SAS, such a great employer? The list declares SAS’ “perks are epic: on-site healthcare, high quality childcare at $410 per month, summer camps for kids”—you get the idea. Check the full list out. Interested in public service? Take a look at the Partnership for Public Services 2011 Best Places to Work Rankings. You might find a company whose perks help to awaken or re-awaken your passion for your career field; that is, you mind find some salt. Alright, maybe the analogy is somewhat strained, but you get the picture.
