Get Recommended!

Often times people don’t realize the importance — or even utility — of getting recommended on LinkedIn.

When LinkedIn prompts you to “Get Recommended,” it’s not just an annoying message, it’s there to help you have a more well-rounded profile.

Why ask for recommendations?
The more recommendations you have, the more likely you are to come up in search.  The hiring managers that are looking for folks to fill that job you want will be looking on LinkedIn, and you do want to come up at the top of that search, right?

Additionally, the more recommendations you have, the more credibility you get on LinkedIn.  This is important when looking for a job.

How do I ask for recommendations?
LinkedIn allows you to request recommendations from your connections on LinkedIn.  You can use their platform, or you can simply email your former colleagues or employers and ask if they would mind writing a quick recommendation for you.  No harm in asking!

How many is too many?
It’s a good rule of thumb to stick to 1-2 per position.  A few recommendations is great, but having a ton on there takes away from the rest of your profile.
