Job fairs are not really interviews, however, they allow you to put on your best appearance and work on critical interview skills. Below are three hints to get you ready to meet and greet!

First Hint—Be ready to talk about yourself.

Be ready for the three-minute interview. Practicing this makes you able to talk about yourself, yours skills and knowledge, and how you would be a good fit for the organization. When visiting the recruiters at each table, being able to describe your abilities and knowledge lets them know that you have taken the time to get ready for the day’s event.

Second Hint—Know what to wear.

Dressing the part shows that you are serious about your job search. Pay attention to not overdress; save your best suit or outfit for your interview. Strive for a comfortable and professional look.

Men should dress business casual, with a dress shirt or tie. If you prefer not to be too formal, a polo shirt and blazer also presents a great relaxed appearance. Do not wear jeans, running shoes, or sandals.

Women should wear a dress or pants. Again, save your best dress or outfit for the interview. Wear comfortable shoes (you’ll be standing all day) and a blazer that you can slip on or off depending on the temperature.

Third Hint—Sharpen that resume!

Target your resume for the event being held so that it highlights your relevant qualifications and skills. Know which employers that your qualifications match best and make sure they each get a copy of your resume.

Following these steps won’t guarantee that you’ll be offered a position on the spot, however, participating in job fairs could make a lasting impression and help your resume rise to the top of the stack. Don’t forget that job fairs also allow a great opportunity to network with recruiters and others looking for work.
