How to Provide a Service Through Entrepreneurial Means

The following is a repost from The Careerists.

In college I took a course in Entrepreneurship taught by Professor David Palmer. Professor Palmer was a tall, thin, and bearded Black man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As I neared graduation from Morgan State University, Professor Palmer’s course served as one of my rites of passage. While his course was not mandatory for my degree, the lesson’s I learned from the tall bearded man would last me the remainder of my studies and dare I say, my life.

On the first day of class he engaged us in a discussion. The discussion began with the question, why should one start a business? When Professor Palmer posed the question to the class we looked at each other with assuming smirks, as if to say, is this a joke? One of my classmates boldly responded, “To make money.” Palmer quickly answered “No”. After fielding a few more answers, he told us the reason someone should start a business is to provide a service. This was the first time I was introduced to this concept. He then went on to relate how being dedicated to the service you provide, will help you learn to earn a profit.
