For most of the week there’s the complaint that it’s not yet Friday. Even when the time comes to say the celebratory TGIF it doesn’t mean it’s time to check out once the clock strikes twelve. How many people do you know actually spend their Friday working hard to get to the weekend? Not many, right? The problem is it’s the TGIF syndrome that hits us all and then extreme laziness sets in. It’s a pretty bad habit to work at 50% on Friday’s just because it’s the end of the week.

Friday is the finish line for most people. At the end of a race you push yourself those last few feet to get the best time possible, so why not do the same in your work performance? Top performers don’t see the end of the week as a time to slack off, but a time to get in their unfinished tasks from the busier days of the week. Cut the bad habit out of your Friday routine and make this day about driving results.

If you haven’t responded to most of your emails during the week then start that in the morning. Friday mornings can be notoriously quiet, Friday afternoons even more so. Then move onto the strategic tasks. You know, the ones you put off because you need more time to be reflective or you needed more research? Throw those into the mix after lunch time. Make some calls and connect with coworkers you haven’t spoken to in a while. It’s a great time for networking as a lot of people are looking to socialize and then bolt. So if you’ve been locked down all week use the time to open up and reach out.

When the clock officially announces it’s time to quit then shut down! In a way you’re rewarding yourself for being diligent with your work. It’s a satisfying feeling ending the work week on a productive note, instead of one where you wasted a whole day waiting for the weekend. Set yourself up for a positive Monday by shifting your schedule early and getting things done before the weekend.

How did you do on last week’s bad habit, being an accidental klepto? If you’re still having issues returning supplies then bring in your own from home. You’ll be less likely to leave your own possessions with someone else, and it’s a great lesson in case someone lifts something of yours from your desk. Just remember to return with care!
