Preparing for Luck

In November of 2012, the Powerball Jackpot climbed to an astounding $587.5 million. It seemed like the entire D.C. Metropolitan area came down with a case of Powerball fever. The grocery and convenience stores were filled with lines of people buying tickets. All the local news stations were out in the community interviewing ticket buyers and reporting on the event. As tradition has it in my family, as the jackpot grows we typically go out and buy a couple of tickets, all of us hoping to get lucky.   The Free Dictionary.com defines luck as the chance happening of fortunate or adverse events; fortune. Media Mogul Oprah Winfrey does not believe in luck. A quote from Oprah Winfrey hung from one of the walls at my high school. It said there was no such thing as luck. Luck is where opportunity meets preparation.  This has stuck with me ever since I read it and is the reason when it comes to our careers, I believe we should be preparing for luck rather than relying on it.

When competing for a job interview we typically will not know anything about the other candidates. We don’t know whether luck will have them not interview well, but we can prepare to give an outstanding interview that will be magnified by their lackluster interview. We don’t know if traffic will be bad for the other candidates competing for the position, but we can prepare to show up early so our promptness stands out.

There are a number of additional things you can do to prepare for luck concerning your career. Find out what they are by visiting the Office of Career Services website. If after researching the programs on the site you desire to know more about them or to devise a strategy to further your career search feel free to contact a career coach at careerservices@apus.edu.
