Being on call was once thought of as a position reserved for doctors, emergency personnel, or building operators. Now with the advances of technology, and the uproar of social media sites and profiles, there’s a need for just about any industry to keep the light on after dark. While it may be unfortunate to spend part of your well deserved evening off at the computer, or sitting by the phone, there are ways to perk up the situation.

If you have telecommuting capabilities at your job, ask to utilize these after hours whenever possible. Some positions that may support this type of request are IT, social media, writing, business, marketing, and analytics and reporting. When you’re able to work from home after your regular schedule make sure to transform your environment into something relaxing. Move your work station, if it’s portable, to a comfortable couch or chair and make sure the lighting is soft. If you’re used to the bright fluorescent lights at work it will be a welcome change to be rid of those awful blinking tube lights. Create a playlist specific to these types of evenings and turn it on after you’ve gotten started. The pace of the music can typically dictate your speed of work, so make sure to be aware of this when putting the list together.

Remember to take your time after hours too. You’re probably on call to remedy certain issues, dish out updates, or add to existing documents. Working now may save you time later, so be smart about the effort you put into it. The less work you provide, the more you may be stuck with later.

Don’t forget to reward yourself too. If you have a favorite coffee drink, make that or buy one before you get started. Or you can treat yourself to a special meal that evening. When the after hours work becomes a common occurrence give yourself an incentive beyond food or special tokens. Stick to a certain song that gets you pumped up to start off your playlist.

If you’re working late at the office, make an after hours routine. Go grab a bite to eat with the other co-workers staying late. Make a call to a friend, or take a few minutes to check your social channels. These breaks apply to habitual late work, or impromptu late hours. If you’re in IT sometimes getting a call on your Saturday can really mess up your plans, and your great mood. While there’s no magical solution for getting that time back, what you can do is make the most out of it and be thorough.

Regardless of your late night schedule try to find a fun “routine” that works for you. Make sure there’s a proofing process for your work, and leave in some downtime for research or playing catch-up if you have the time for it.
