Most industries follow a similar dress code, business casual. There’s also the occasional business professional, and then there is the casual work dress atmosphere. If you’re unsure of how to dress for a business casual office there are a few key items to keep out of your wardrobe.

For example, anything you may wear on the beach or on a date should not be considered office attire. Skip the flip flops, sandals, yoga pants, and bermuda shorts. We’re almost through winter, so mostly all your colleagues will be covered up for now, but there may be a few offenders that view the chilly weather as an opportunity to dress like they’re sitting at home. It isn’t your responsibility to tattle on them, unless you work in HR, so instead focus on how you’re dressing for work.

We all have days when we don’t feel like dressing for the job we have, we’d rather dress comfortably for the next eight or nine hours. Don’t let yourself slip just because you feel comfortable at work, and also don’t mimic how your colleagues dress. One of the bigger misconceptions about office dress can be picked up from the few co-workers that always dress casual. While it may not seem like they’re being judged, they are if what they’re wearing falls far outside of the acceptable dress code. Be your own person and stop dressing to match others around you. If you’re not familiar with what is acceptable to wear at work then consult the manual. Having a personal style will set you apart from the rest, and will give you a unique identity that gives you a sense of comfort; even when you’re wearing heels and a blazer.

If it’s difficult picking out a professional outfit every morning then set it out the night before. You can have one semi-casual day a week. Most offices have a casual Friday, but if you don’t alter your choice of shoes to flats or loafers. Selecting more comfortable fabrics can be be nice, without looking sloppy. Look for clothing items in cotton or silk for that extra touch of comfort. Just be sure to avoid bringing in the fuzzy slippers from home, instead opt for a pair of professional looking flats when your heels are killing you. Another subtle thing to avoid is body language at your desk. Propping your feet up can be a big no-no, and may be embarrassing if your boss walks by while you’re taking a rest.

How did you do with our last bad habit, getting distracted on a remote day? If you’re struggling to keep yourself on track while you work from home them try limiting distractions, or finding a separate location to work from.
