While the waves of the trepidation beneath which America’s workforce was submerged following the economic downturn in 2008, and the financial tumult and market volatility that followed, have long receded, for many job seekers displaced by the downturn and who are still saddled with doubt about their career, the downturn is hardly a distant memory, but rather, an immediate reality. And while, admittedly, markets have since calmed, economic storm clouds continue to loom, and many job leads, rather than oases, are mirages—ever distant illusions, dotting the horizon. However, for the persistent or even doubtful job seeker, positions are available, and in a greater volume than the doom-and-gloom of the preceding few sentences would seem to suggest.
In fact, as Debra Auerbach’s recent contribution to The Work Buzz suggests, there is nothing illusory about the hiring data we see released each month by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Statistics: employers are hiring, and job seekers, eager to be hired, simply need to be looking in the right place: to the left or right of the mirage on which their eyes are fixed, may be an actual oases. The group of 15 employers Auerbach highlights in her article (listed below), each of which is hoping to expand their employee rolls, is proof of this, and, even if the aggregate impact of these employers’ economic activity is limited, each demonstrates that for the perennial job seeker, there still exist oases to which he or she may escape the perils of a turbulent jobscape. (Of course, students of AMU and APU have available to them a stock of employers waiting for their resumes in NACElink, the university’s job board.)
