Are You Married, in a Long Term Relationship, or Casually Dating Your Job?

If you could put a status up about your current relationship to your job, what would it be? The “married” type would be the workaholic that lives and breathes their work for their position, and the company they work for. Those in an LTR are present, but give themselves room to have a life outside of the office. As for casually dating, that may be a temp or someone looking for a better opportunity. It’s important to decide where you stand with your job, because it’ll help keep you on your career trajectory and determine if it’s still the best fit for you professionally.

The thought of being in a relationship coupled with work came to me from Facebook. It’s the new equivalent to “shouting from the rooftops” that you’re head over heels for someone, or you’re single and looking to take a sip from the dating pool. When you want to be official about something, you pronounce it through Facebook for all your network to see.

So, why can’t you do the same for your work?

There isn’t an “I love my job” button just yet, but it’s food for thought. Instead of shouting how much you hate your job, or how you’re working late yet again, which you shouldn’t be doing in the first place, try establishing your relationship to your position. Where do you two stand? Are you happy and committed, or ready for a divorce? You need to determine if you’re able to go through better or worse with this job, or if you’re just on a second date. The seriousness you display to this status should reveal a lot about your overall attitude toward the company and the role you’re fitting.

Now, if you want to get more serious and move forward with more responsibility. Talk to your manager about getting the “keys to the apartment.” Just make sure you’re able to display your reliability and capability for the work you’re looking to supply. If things just aren’t working out, and you’ve been faithful for years, look for new possibilities in your career region. Count it off as experience and move on.

So, tonight when you’re logging out and packing up ask yourself a question…”Am I here for the money, experience, or because I believe in this company and want to make it the best it can be?”
