Update Your Status With Work Appropriate Chatter

Having a bad day? A knee jerk response is to post about it on Facebook, or Google+. Whether you’re direct about what’s got your hair in knots, or you’ve kept it cryptic, there’s no doubt that your work friends are checking it out on their news feed. So, to avoid an uncomfortable chat with your boss, or the person you were talking about, screen your updates first before you hit “post”.

For now, your social presence is still yours and unless your work states otherwise you have the right to post personal, and private information on your profile. But once you start accepting friend requests from people in your office, you’re opening up the floodgates for snoops and a whole different audience then your friends and family. If something got you riled up at work, take a deep breath and take a few minutes before you consider posting. Once your thoughts are published, you can’t always erase the impact that it makes.

Still feel like you want to post something controversial, consider these tactics first:

  • Talk it out with a work friend; funny hand gestures and voice imitations are welcome.
  • If the event is hindering your work, tell your boss!
  • Turn it into sarcasm and detach from the work event.
  • Type it out, then delete it.
  • Write it on a post-it, and then shred it.

What about if you’re just looking for a job? Well, remember that the new timeline on Facebook makes it easier to skim your history of kooky status updates. If your mom would blush reading it, so would your potential employer. Get the thought out of your system, you don’t need an audience everytime something bad happens at work. Confide in a friend instead, they’ll be able to perk you up and you won’t have an embarrasing reminder the next day of your angry rant on social media.
