Don’t Make Lists on Your Resume, Write to Inform and Impress

A job application is structured like a typical form. You fill out your name, the job you’re applying for, and your skills that relate. The tiny section for comments is where you can elaborate and try to stand out from the rest. Don’t treat your resume like a form.

For some just leaving college it may be easier for an “out of the box” resume format. But once you’ve copied the look, make sure you take the time to go back in and change things around. With social media being as popular as it is volume on a resume may not stand out like you want it to. Some people are going as far as creating an infographic to showcase their unique abilities. If creativity isn’t your strong point then an infograph or video resume may not be the way to go, but you can still impress an employer with what you have to offer.

Try instead showcasing your unique abilities. If possible, strip out information that could be irrelevant to the job you’re applying for. If you love being part of a team try including a group project you managed, and the outcome of it. A potential employer wants to read your actions through the resume, not be told all the things you did.
