Sometimes our temper gets the best of us at work. Anything from a co-workers request, to a customers question, or your boss put too many exclamation marks in an email can set us off. Don’t let these little things get to you. The bigger issues are typically a result of the snowball effect, and if you don’t stop them early on you may have a big mess to deal with later.

What can you do to curb the urge to send back a sarcastic reply? Pretend you’re that person. Use psychology as a means to resolve the conflict. If you were requesting the same thing, what kind of reply are you expecting? It all reverts back to “you get more flies with sugar than vinegar.” Kill them with kindness.

While I’m sure many have heard this advice many times, how many actually use it? There’s a reason certain email systems have a pop-up message that says “are you sure you want to send this message” before you click send. It’s your Jiminy Cricket telling you to “let you conscience be your guide.” Wait before you respond and collect your thoughts, or maybe ask them another question to clarify the situation. Miscommunication can also be a cause for friction, so get everything out in the open.
